Elucidation from a single point of departure of the basic
structural features of the solar system, of the structure and evolution of the Earth and the other celestial bodies, is the goal of the scientists engaged in planetary cosmogony. Soviet science is successfully advancing towards this objective. In recent years, thanks to the efforts of Otto Schmidt, member of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences, and his group of scientists, the foundations have been
laid of a theory concerning the origin of the Earth and the planets. This theory, together with the closely related problems of the Earth’s internal structure and evolution, is the subject of the present book.
