Description

In comprehending the physical content of dynamic variables which have geometric meaning, for example, the space-time partic1e coor- dinates x, y, z, t it is often necessary to have recourse to gedanken experiments which, although not feasible in practice, can nevertheless be compatible with the basic principles of geometry and quantum mechanics. In a desert sea of abstract constructions there is a stiIl larger distance between macroscopic concepts of space-time and the way of em- ploying the coordinates x, y, z and t in relativistic quantum field theory.
It is shown in this monograph that if elementary partic1es have a structure it is doubtful whether the coordinates of eIementary partic1es, x, y, z, t, can even be defined exactIy, let alone the coordinates of the eIements which make up these particIes (if they do not exist only in our imagination). This important fact is revealed in even the most favourable gedanken experiments.

From this fact, doubt arises about the logical validity of using the
symbols x, y, z, t as the space-time coordinates to describe phenomena inside elementary particles. This allows theoreticians a certain freedom of choice of space-time and causal relationships within elementary particles; in other words, an arbitrariness of choice of the geometry in the small.
The last chapters of this book describe some models used to illustrate the situation described above. In concluding, experimental data and ex- perimental possibilities relating to geometric and causal problems in the microworld are discussed.
The present monograph is based to agreat extent on the author's publications at different times. A large number of papers have been prepared jointly with his young colleagues at the Laboratory of Theoret- ical Physics at Dubna, B.M.Barbashov, N.A.Chernikov, G.I.Kolerov, G. V. Efimov and V. G. Kadyshevsky. The author was very glad to take the opportunity ofreflecting in this monograph some oftheir original in- vestigations. The author is very grateful to his colleagues for useful dis- cussions which have greatly contributed to clarifying many controversial questions. The author is especially grateful to M. A. Markov and B. M. Barbashov for their invaluable advice and comments and for fultilling the task of critically reading the manuscript, and to G. 1. Kolerov for his assistance in preparing it.
