The song tells the story of a maiden thinking that if she were a bird she would perch high on a branch and watch for her love to come by, and then have the bird tell him of her secret love for him. If her love rejected her, then she would fly away to a lone spot and never sing again. It is safe to say by looking at the obligato score that the flute represents the bird.
The publishing company of Balmer and Weber in St. Louis, Missouri, began operation in 1848, at the hands of two brothers in law from German immigrant families. Operating into the first half of the twentieth century, the Balmer and Weber Music House sold Pianolas built the Aeolian Company and at one time was a social hub for music events in the St. Louis area.
