Description
This is a rather short book, though not one of the books of less than 120 pages. The story is a quite charming one. A family that have settled in the West have decided to move further on into even remoter territory. One day the father goes out in the snow to set his traps, and has with him his two children, a boy of twelve and a girl of ten. Somehow the children get lost in the snow, and eventually are captured by a tribe of Indians. Breaking free, but miraculously equipped with all sorts of things they need, including a gun and ammunition, to say nothing of needles and thread for clothing repair, they set out to try to get back to their father and mother. They set up a part-time home on the shores of Siver Lake, where they recoup their stores by trapping and shooting, even to the extent of killing a bear they had caught with a dead-fall. They are taken in hand by a kindly Indian, but are eventually rescued by a party of hunters that included their father, despite a serious attack on that party by some very warlike Indians, which was, of course repulsed. It takes about four hours to play as an audiobook.
