Description

‘Swarajnama’ is directed by noted film personality Girish Karnad. Beginning with 1757, it recounts 190 years of India’s freedom struggle, and is in a newscast format. This film was released on 09-August-2007 by Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi and was released by Prasar Bharati.The Minister presented the first copy of the DVD to Shri Girish Karnad.

Swarajnama is an interesting account of some important events of enslaved India and her struggle for freedom. It is a documentation of 190 years of colonised India, each episode depicting events related to a particular month. The first episode showcases some of the happenings in January in different years.

  • February 4, 1922 The Chauri Chaura incidence where the Satyagrahi volunteers set ablaze the police station of Chauri Chara in Gorakhpur. Mahatma Gandhi had withdrawn the Civil Disobedience MOvement because of this violence at a time when the movement was at its peak. Historian Dr. Shahid Amin offers valuable insight.
  • February 18, 1946 Due to poor management, Indian Navy revolted under the British. It prompted the Britishers to leave India sooner than later. Interview with one of the leaders of the mutiny, Leading Telegraphists, B. C. Dutt.
