Scythian and Thracian Antiquities in Oxford
About this Book
This short book forms a brief discussion and illustrated guide to two collections held by the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Artefacts from a Greco-Scythian burial from the necropolis of the city of Nymphaeum in the Ukraine and a Thracian princely burial from Dalboki in Bulgaria were acquired by the Ashmolean in 1885 and 1947 respectively. Michael Vickers provides an outline history of the discovery of these graves, describes what happened to the objects before they were acquired by the Ashmolean and provides lengthy captions to colour photographs of many of the objects. The items of jewellery, silver plate, bronzework, ceramics and textile fragments provide important insights into local production and the influence and intervention of Greek craftsmanship.
