Perspectives on Canadian Marine Fisheries Management
About this Book
The 15 papers in this publication describe different management approaches that are being tried in the Arctic, the Atlantic and the Pacific fisheries, as well as in the St. Lawrence. Notably, managers have achieved considerable success in maintaining, rebuilding and enhancing salmon populations in Pacific fisheries in recent years, whereas the stability of Atlantic fisheries is threatened. The importance of a healthy marine environment in determining resource productivity is discussed. The role that scientific advice plays in the management process and the impact of government financial intervention are also described. The potential for aquaculture to supplement or replace some wild fisheries is also examined.
