종교적 극단주의(religious extremism) VS 관용이야말로 위대한 선(toleration is a great good) : 마이카 클라크(Micah Clarke by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1889)는 17세기 영국의 몬머스의 난(Monmouth Rebellion of 1685)을 소재로 한 역사 모험 소설(a historical adventure novel)로 책 제목은 주인공 마이카 클라크(Micah Clarke)의 이름입니다. 모험에 대한 낭만을 품고 참전한 마이카 클라크(Micah Clarke)가 경험을 쌓으며 좌절하고, 분노하고 때론 비참해지는 과정을 생생하게 묘사하고 있습니다. 특히 무수한 피를 흘리고, 카리브 해 어딘가의 바베이도스(Barbados)로 노예로 팔려가는 상황에서 종교적 극단주의(religious extremism)에 대한 회의감과 관용이야말로 위대한 선(toleration is a great good)이라는 것을 깨닫게 되는데……. 이것이 작가 코난 도일이 작품을 통해 독자들에게 전달하고자 했던 주제일 것입니다.

 

마이카 클라크(Micah Clarke by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1889)는 국내에 번역본조차 출간되지 않은 작품입니다만, 영국인이 사랑한 작가답게 BBC에서 1937년을 시작으로 1966년과 1985년 라디오 드라마로 제작 및 방영하였습니다. 특히 1985년 라디오 드라마는 5부작으로 Martyn Read, Patrick Troughton, James Bryce, Nicholas Courtney 등의 성우가 각각 Micah Clarke, Decimus Saxon, Reuben Lockarby, Joseph Clarke 역을 맡아 열연을 펼쳤습니다.

 

17세기 영국판 왕좌의 난, 몬머스의 난(Monmouth Rebellion of 1685) : 몬머스의 난(Monmouth Rebellion of 1685)은 잉글랜드, 스코틀랜드, 아일랜드의 국왕 제임스 2세(James II of England)가 로마 가톨릭 신자(Catholic Church)라는 사실에 반발한 신교도(Protestantism)의 난으로, 난을 일으킨 몬머스 공작(James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth)의 이름에서 따온 1685년의 사건입니다. 종교란 명분을 내세웠으나, 실질적으로는 삼촌의 왕좌를 뺏기 위한 몬머스 공작(James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth)의 반란으로, 그는 제임스 2세의 전임자이자 그의 형인 찰스 2세(Charles II of England)의 사생아였습니다. 1685년 5월부터 7월까지 몬머스 공작의 명성이 높은 잉글랜드 서남부에서 4000여명의 병력을 동원하였고, 초반에는 파죽지세의 기세를 자랑하였으나……. 7월 6일 세지무어 전투(Sedgemoor)에서 대패하면서 결국 진압되었습니다.

 

피의 순회 재판(Bloody Asssizes) : 1400명 이상의 수감자를 대상으로 열린 순회 재판(The courts of assize)은 다섯 명의 판사 - Sir William Montague(Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer), Sir Robert Wright, Sir Francis Wythens(Justice of the King's Bench), Sir Creswell Levinz(Justice of the Common Pleas), Sir Henry Pollexfen과 주 대법원장 조지 제프리(Lord Chief Justice George Jeffreys)가 지휘하였습니다. 윈체스터(Winchester)부터 웨스트 컨트리(West Country), 솔즈베리(Salisbury), 도체스터(Dorchester)의 앤텔로프 호텔(Antelope Hotel), 엑서터 길드홀(Exeter Guildhall), 톤턴 성의 그레이트 홀(Great Hall of Taunton Castle), 웰스 마켓(Wells Market), 아지즈 홀(Assize Hall) 등 영국 각지를 순회하며 재판이 치러졌기에 이를 순회 재판(The courts of assize)이라 부릅니다.

 

몬머스 공작은 불과 9일 후인 7월 15일 반역죄로 참수되었으며, 그의 수많은 지지자 또한 사형과 유배(Penal transportation)에 처해졌습니다. 1400여명의 수감자 대부분에게 교수형을 선언한 주 대법원장 조지 제프리(Lord Chief Justice George Jeffreys)는 피의 순회 재판(Bloody Asssizes)이란 악명을 낳았을 정도로 무차별적으로 교수형(indiscriminate hangings)을 집행하였습니다. 물론 실제로 교수형에 처해진 이는 300명 미만이지만, 가까스로 사형을 피한 800에서 850여명은 서인도(West Indies)를 비롯한 영국의 식민지로 노예로 끌려가야만 했습니다. 그러나 반란군을 효과적으로 처분한 공로를 인정받아 제임스 왕(King James)으로부터 수상(Lord Chancellor)으로 임명되었으나... 교수형 판사(the hanging judge)란 악명을 피할 수 없었습니다. 그 또한 명예혁명(名譽革命, Glorious Revolution)(1688) 후 런던타워에 수감되어 1689년 사망하였습니다.

 

아서 코난 도일과 오스카 와일드(Oscar Wilde)가 만난 후 세계적인 걸작이 탄생했다구?! : 아서 코난 도일은 마이카 클라크(Micah Clarke by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1889)를 출간한 직후 미국 월간지 리핀코트(Lippincott's Monthly Magazine) 편집장 조지프 M. 스토더트(Joseph M. Stoddart)의 초대를 받아 더 랭햄 런던(The Langham, London)에서 만났습니다. 당시의 만찬에 동석한 또 한명의 작가가 있었으니, 그가 바로 오스카 와일드(Oscar Wilde)! 두 작가는 갓 출간된 마이카 클라크(Micah Clarke by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1889)를 소재로 이야기를 나누었고, 코난 도일은 1924년 출간한 자서전 추억과 모험(Memories and Adventures)(1924)에서 당시의 만남을 언급하였습니다. 코난 도일은 오스카 와일드가 조지 제프리 판사(Judge George Jeffreys)의 캐릭터에 대해 깊은 관심을 보였다고 주장하였습니다. 편집장 조지프 M. 스토더트(Joseph M.
