▶ 지구에서 달까지(From the Earth to the Moon)는 풍자 소설?! : 쥘 베른의 작품은 모험 소설(Adventure stories)로 인식되지만, 사실 그의 또 다른 장기는 당대 각국의 정세와 인간 군상을 비웃는 풍자(Satirical novels)에 있습니다. 미국 남북 전쟁(American Civil War)(1861~1865) 당시 활약한 이들이 볼티모어 총기 클럽(Baltimore Gun Club)을 결성하였으나, 더 이상 자신이 개발한 총기, 포탄, 화약을 사용하지 못하게 되자 실의에 빠집니다. 그때!! 달까지 포탄을 쏘아 올리겠다는 클럽장 바비케인(Barbicane)의 제안에 모든 회원들이 열광하는 모습은 그저 시작일 뿐…….

▶ 쥘 베른은 예언가?! : 인류가 최초로 달에 착륙한 것은 1969년 7월 20일 미국 아폴로 11호(Apollo 11)입니다. 그러자 쥘 베른이 작품이 다시 한 번 화제가 되었는데, 그가 작품에 묘사한 것이 현실에서 엇비슷하게 이루어진 것이 적지 않았기 때문입니다. 미국 영토에서 가장 위도가 낮은 지역에 설치된 플로리다 대포 발사지 탬파(Tampa)는 현재의 존 F. 케네디 우주센터(John F. Kennedy Space Center, KSC)와 불과 200km 떨어져 있습니다. 달까지의 소요시간과 궤도는 물론 가스를 위로 분사하여, 하강하는 우주선의 속도를 줄이는 역추진 로켓(逆推進rocket), 바다 위에 로켓을 착륙시키는 해상착수(海上着手)와 하와이에서 남서쪽에 위치한 태평양 귀환지점 등 또한 놀라울 정도로 흡사합니다. 아폴로 프로그램(Apollo Program) 당시 NASA 관계자에게도 쥘 베른의 작품은 손꼽히는 애독서로 사령선(CM-107)을 작품에 등장하는 컬럼비아드(The Columbiad)에서 따온 컬럼비아(Columbia)로 명명된 바 있으며, 그의 예언(?!)을 정리한 서프라이즈 711회가 2015년 방영되었습니다.
