작가 아서 코난 도일은 머리말(PREFACE)을 통해 전쟁과 스포츠에 관한 단편을 모은 녹색 깃발(The Green Flag, and Other Stories of War and Sport by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1900)을 언급하며, 화롯가 이야기(Round the Fire Stories by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1908)는 기괴하고 끔찍한 이야기(the terrible—such tales)란 주제로 묶은 단편집이라는 것을 밝혔습니다. 영국에서는 추운 겨울날(a winter’s night) 화롯가 주변에 둘러 앉아(round the fire) 무서운 이야기를 하는 풍습이 있는데, 녹색 깃발 이후 8년 만에 출간한 단편집 제목은 바로 여기에서 따온 것입니다. 영국의 Smith, Elder & Co.와 미국 McClure 출판사에서 각각 1908년 출간하였으며, 17편의 공포와 미스터리 단편을 담고 있습니다. 테마여행신문 TTN Korea 영어고전(English Classics)과 함께 어제도, 오늘도, 내일도 멋진 문학여행을! In a previous volume, “The Green Flag,” I have assembled a number of my stories which deal with warfare or with sport. In the present collection those have been brought together which are concerned with the grotesque and with the terrible—such tales as might well be read “round the fire” upon a winter’s night. This would be my ideal atmosphere for such stories, if an author might choose his time and place as an artist does the light and hanging of his picture. However, if they have the good fortune to give pleasure to any one, at any time or place, their author will be very satisfied.

 

이전 권인 "The Green Flag"에서 나는 전쟁이나 스포츠를 다루는 많은 이야기를 모았습니다. 현재 컬렉션에는 기괴하고 끔찍한 이야기, 즉 겨울 밤에 "불 주위에서" 읽을 수 있는 것과 같은 이야기가 모였습니다. 작가가 자신의 그림에 조명과 교수형을 하는 것처럼 작가가 시간과 장소를 선택할 수 있다면 이런 이야기를 하기에 이상적인 분위기가 될 것입니다. 그러나 언제, 어디서나, 누군가에게 기쁨을 줄 수 있는 행운이 있다면 작가는 매우 만족할 것입니다.

 

셜록 홈즈가 등장하지 않는 코난 도일의 추리 소설?! : 아서 코난 도일의 명성이 무색하게도 셜록 홈즈(Sherlock Holmes) 시리즈를 제외한 그의 작품은 (일부 SF와 역사 소설을 제외하면) 대부분 국내에 번역 출간이 되어 있지 않습니다. 그러나 ‘한국의 무더운 여름날’ 그의 공포소설집을 읽는 것은 잠시나마 더위를 잊게 해줄 것입니다. 유령, 미해결 범죄, 광기, 악마, 강도, 범죄자, 유죄 그리고 풀리지 않는 미스터리가 당신을 기다립니다! 세 번째 단편 III. The Man with the Watches와 6번째 단편 VI. The Black Doctor, 9번째 단편 IX. The Lost Special에서 독자에 따라서 탐정 셜록 홈즈의 분위기를 강하게 느끼실 것입니다. 셜록 홈즈 본인이 등장하지는 않습니다만 코난 도일 특유의 ‘미스터리한 범죄의 발생-논리적인 가설의 제시-가설의 검증과 사건의 해결’이란 추리 소설의 형식과 구조는 물론 반전이란 요소를 충실하게 답습하고 있거든요.

 

불가능을 제외하고 남은 것이 아무리 믿을 수 없는 진실이라 하더라도 그것이 바로 진실이야(When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.) : 셜록 홈즈의 이름을 빌어 탄생한 위 문장은 수많은 추리소설과 애니메이션 – 명탐정 코난 등에 등장한 바 있고, 이 덕분에 추리 소설 마니아가 아니더라도 익히 알고 계실 것입니다. 세 번째 단편 III. The Man with the Watches에는 놀랍게도 저 문장과 흡사한 대사가 등장합니다. 이정도면 셜록 홈즈란 이름만 없을 뿐 그가 등장하는 추리소설이라고 해도 과언이 아닐 것입니다. 셜록키언에게는 달리는 기차 칸에서의 살인 사건을 해결하는 정체불명의 범인보다, 정체불명의 탐정이 더 궁금해지는 작품이지요.

 

“Whatever may be the truth,” said he, “it must depend upon some bizarre and rare combination of events, so we need have no hesitation in postulating such events in our explanation. In the absence of 50data we must abandon the analytic or scientific method of investigation, and must approach it in the synthetic fashion. In a word, instead of taking known events and deducing from them what has occurred, we must build up a fanciful explanation if it will only be consistent with known events. We can then test this explanation by any fresh facts which may arise. If they all fit into their places, the probability is that we are upon the right track, and with each fresh fact this probability increases in a geometrical progression until the evidence becomes final and convincing.
