▶ CHAPTER I — CHILDHOOD AND EARLY EDUCATION. It seems proper that I should prefix to the following biographical sketch some mention of the reasons which have made me think it desirable that I should leave behind me such a memorial of so uneventful a life as mine. ▶ CHAPTER II — MORAL INFLUENCES IN EARLY YOUTH. MY FATHER'S CHARACTER AND OPINIONS. In my education, as in that of everyone, the moral influences, which are so much more important than all others, are also the most complicated, and the most difficult to specify with any approach to completeness. Without attempting the hopeless task of detailing the circumstances by which, in this respect, my early character may have been shaped, I shall confine myself to a few leading points, which form an indispensable part of any true account of my education. ▷ 제2장 — 소년기에 받은 도덕적 영향 –아버지의 성격과 사상. 모든 사람의 교육에서와 마찬가지로 나의 교육에서도 다른 모든 것보다 훨씬 더 중요한 도덕적 영향은 가장 복잡하고 완전성에 대한 접근 방식으로 지정하기 가장 어렵습니다. 이 점에서 나의 초기 성격이 형성되었을 수 있는 상황을 자세히 설명하려는 절망적인 작업을 시도하지 않고, 나의 교육에 대한 진정한 설명에 없어서는 안 될 부분을 형성하는 몇 가지 주요 사항에만 국한하겠습니다.

 

▶ CHAPTER III — LAST STAGE OF EDUCATION, AND FIRST OF SELF-EDUCATION. For the first year or two after my visit to France, I continued my old studies, with the addition of some new ones. When I returned, my father was just finishing for the press his Elements of Political Economy, and he made me perform an exercise on the manuscript, which Mr. Bentham practised on all his own writings, making what he called "marginal contents"; a short abstract of every paragraph, to enable the writer more easily to judge of, and improve, the order of the ideas, and the general character of the exposition. ▷ 제3장 — 교육의 마지막 단계, 독학의 시작. 프랑스를 방문한 후 첫 1~2년 동안 나는 새로운 공부를 추가하면서 기존 공부를 계속했습니다. 내가 돌아왔을 때 아버지는 언론을 위해 정치경제학의 요소를 막 끝내고 있었고, 원고에 대한 연습을 하게 했고, 벤담 씨는 자신이 쓴 모든 글에 대해 연습하여 "주요 내용"이라고 부르는 것을 만들었습니다. 작가가 아이디어의 순서와 설명의 일반적인 성격을 더 쉽게 판단하고 개선할 수 있도록 모든 단락에 대한 짧은 개요를 작성합니다.

 

▶ CHAPTER IV — YOUTHFUL PROPAGANDISM. THE "WESTMINSTER REVIEW". The occupation of so much of my time by office work did not relax my attention to my own pursuits, which were never carried on more vigorously. It was about this time that I began to write in newspapers.
