▶ 단행집 제목 롤링 스톤(Rolling Stones)은 구르는 돌은 이끼가 끼지 않는다(A rolling stone gathers no moss)란 속담의 ‘구르는 돌’로 옮길 수 있겠으나, 매주 토요일 텍사스 오스틴에서 발행된 주간지명이라는 점을 감안해 ‘롤링 스톤’으로 번역하였습니다. 오 헨리가 꾸준히 기고했던 주간지 중 하나입니다. ▷ THE ROLLING STONE is a weekly paper published in Austin, Texas every Saturday and will endeavor to fill along-felt want that does not appear, by the way, to be altogether in-satiable at present. 롤링 스톤은 텍사스 주 오스틴에서 매주 토요일에 발행되는 주간지이며 현재 완전히 만족할 수 없는 것처럼 보이지 않는 간절한 욕구를 채우기 위해 노력할 것입니다.

▶ INTRODUCTION. This the twelfth and final volume of O. Henry’s work gets its title from an early newspaper venture of which he was the head and front. On April 28, 1894, there appeared in Austin, Texas, volume 1, number 3, of The Rolling Stone, with a circulation greatly in excess of that of the only two numbers that had gone before. Apparently the business office was encouraged. The first two issues of one thousand copies each had been bought up. Of the third an edition of six thousand was published and distributed free, so that the business men of Austin, Texas, might know what a good medium was at hand for their advertising. The editor and proprietor and illustrator of The Rolling Stone was Will Porter, incidentally Paying and Receiving Teller in Major Brackenridge’s bank. ▷ 서문(Introduction). 오 헨리 작품의 12번째이자 마지막 책인 이 책의 제목은 그가 헤드이자 프런트였던 초기 신문 벤처에서 따온 것입니다. 1894년 4월 28일, 텍사스 오스틴에서 《롤링 스톤》 1권 3호가 등장했는데, 이전에 발행된 유일한 두 권의 발행 부수를 훨씬 초과했습니다. 분명히 사업소가 장려되었습니다. 각각 1,000부의 처음 두 호가 매진되었습니다. 3판 중 6,000판이 출판되어 무료로 배포되었으므로 텍사스 오스틴의 사업가들은 광고를 위한 좋은 매체가 무엇인지 알 수 있었습니다. 《롤링 스톤》의 편집자이자 소유주이자 삽화가인 윌 포터(Will Porter)는 브래켄릿지(Brackenridge) 소령의 은행에서 지불 및 수신 출납원이었습니다.

 

▶ Of the poems, there are a few whose authorship might have been in doubt if the compiler of this collection had not secured external evidence that made them certainly the work of O. Henry. Without this very strong evidence, they might have been rejected because they were not entirely the kind of poems the readers of O. Henry would expect from him. Most of them however, were found in his own indubitable manuscript or over his own signature. ▷ 이 시집의 편찬자가 확실히 오 헨리의 작품으로 만드는 외부 증거를 확보하지 않았다면 저자가 의심될 수 있는 시가 몇 개 있습니다. 이 매우 강력한 증거가 없었다면 오 헨리의 독자들이 그에게 기대하는 시가 아니었기 때문에 거부되었을 수 있습니다. 그러나 그들 대부분은 의심할 여지가 없는 그의 원고나 그의 서명에서 발견되었습니다.

 

▶ There is extant a mass of O. Henry correspondence that has not been included in this collection. During the better part of a decade in New York City he wrote constantly to editors, and in many instances intimately. This is very important material, and permission has been secured to use nearly all of it in a biographical volume that will be issued within the next two or three years. The letters in this volume have been chosen as an “exihibit,” as early specimens of his writing and for their particularly characteristic turns of thought and phrase.
