Description
Srilekha Chattopadhyay is former teacher of Mrinalini Ananda Pathshala a school for elementary education in Patha Bhavana, Visva Bharati, Santiniketan. Along with editing educational journals and translating from foreign literature, for a long time she has been a keen observer of social history and traditional art forms. This article is about a rare book "Meyeli Brata" on bengali women's religious rituals, which was published a century ago in 1896-'97. The book was written by Aghorenath Chattopadhyay under the insistence of Rabindranath Tagore who insisted and patronized many other scholars to write and document social history.
This article was published in "Desh" magazine in 1995, a year before the centenary of the first publication of "Meyeli Brata". Later she edited and helped the book to get republished also which was almost out of print. Withal reminding about the history of the book and the current of documentation of traditional history in nineteenth century Bengal, the article itself gives glimpses of social life of women of that period and provokes number of insights related to that sphere.
