About this Book

Historical events, say the authors, do not remain in the minds of people just because they have occurred. It is the writers who, in recreating these events, preserve them for posterity. Historiography, the study of historians and their contribution to the body of historical records, becomes very important, therefore, for a serious understanding of the past. This book has come to be regarded as a standard general survey and invaluable reference book on American historiography. Kraus wrote A History of American History in 1937. In 1953, he revised and updated this book under the title The Writing of American History. This second edition of the book has been thoroughly revised by co-author David D. Joyce, with a lot of new material added. ISBN 0-8061-1519-X : $27.50.
