About this Book

The story is based on the epic poem "The song of Roland" where on 15th August,778, the Emperor Charlemagne and his army were crossing the Pyrenees on their way back to France. They had been fighting the Saracens in Spain. As the rearguard was passing through the narrow valley of Roncesvalles, from the wooded slopes of the mountains a trecherous party of Basques swept down upon them, looted their baggage and slaughtered every man.
