The book PERIPROSTHETIC JOINT INFECTION: Practical Management Guide provides practical information that clinicians can utilize to provide care to patients with periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). The book is divided into four sections. Section 1, 2, 3, and 4 are on basics, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of PJI respectively. Section 1 has chapters that include basics of PJI--definition, incidence, economics, antibiotics, role of biofilm, management, future trends and challenges. Section 2 is on prevention of PJI and covers aspects like predisposing factors, patient medical optimization, preoperative diabetic maintenance and control, preoperative skin preparation, preventive strategies, etc. Section 3 is on the diagnosis of PJI in hip and knee according to AAOS Clinical Practice Guidelines. It covers topics like available diagnostic laboratory tests, aspiration, molecular markers, imaging techniques, culture principles, diagnosis of PJI in inflammatory conditions and conditions that mimics PJI. Section 4 is on treatment strategies for PJI--management of wound drainage, fungal PJIs, mycobacterial infection and enterococcal PJI|surgical procedures like irrigation and debridement, one-stage exchange arthroplasty, resection arthroplasty and two-stage exchange arthroplasty for treating PJI|prognosis and outcome of PJI.
