Journey to the West
About this Book
The thriving region, known as South East Asia, has been the target of many European countries, who colonized this area and benefited from its rich resources. "Journey to the West" by Walter Nilam (nee: Gouw Chin Sian) is a story typical of many Indonesians of Chinese descent, living during the tumultuous and changing periods of the last century of what is now the Republic of Indonesia. From growing up under the Dutch Colonial administration, through the Second World War, and during the fight for Independence, the book tells of his struggles and resourceful decisions during those trying times to survive and to thrive. This autobiography also delves into the rich Chinese and local cultures that make up the diversity of Indonesia. He covers his roots and his ancestors in China. His journey ends in California, in the West, the place he longed to go as a child. Although the book covers a multitude of subjects, it is written in a style, which is easy to read and to enjoy.
