Wells)(1866~1946)가 1908년 7월 인디펜던트 매거진(Independent Magazine)에 발표한 기고문을 포괄하는 네 권(Book The Fourth) 분량의 철학서(work of philosophy)입니다. 각각의 책은 형이상학(Metaphysics), 믿음에 관하여(Of Belief), 일반 행동에 관하여(Of General Conduct), 일부 개인적인 일(Some Personal Things) 순으로 구분되며, 그의 종교관과 종교적 개종(religious conversion), 다윈주의(Darwinism), 실용주의(pragmatism) 등이 혼합되어 있습니다. 유부남 작가가 자신의 제자 앰버 리브스(Amber Blanco White)(1887~1981)와 열애에 빠진 시기에 집필한 저서 중 하나로, 그녀는 훗날 G. ▶ Now when I say I make my beliefs and that I cannot prove them to you and convince you of them, that does not mean that I make them wantonly and regardless of fact, that I throw them off as a child scribbles on a slate. Mr. Ruskin, if I remember rightly, accused Whistler of throwing a pot of paint in the face of the public,—that was the essence of his libel. The artistic method in this field of beliefs, as in the field of visual renderings, is one of great freedom and initiative and great poverty of test, but of no wantonness; the conditions of rightness are none the less imperative because they are mysterious and indefinable.

▶ There is no equity in the universe, in the various spectacle outside our minds, and the most terrible nightmare the human imagination has ever engendered is a Just God, measuring, with himself as the Standard, against finite men. Ultimately there is no adequacy, we are all weighed in the balance and found wanting. So, as the recognition of this has grown, Justice has been tempered with Mercy, which indeed is no more than an attempt to equalize things by making the factors of the very defect that is condemned, its condonation. The modern mind fluctuates uncertainly somewhere between these extremes, now harsh and now ineffectual. To me there seems no validity in these quasi-absolute standards.

 

우주, 우리 마음 밖의 다양한 광경에는 공평함이 없으며, 인간의 상상이 낳은 가장 끔찍한 악몽은 자신을 표준으로 삼고 유한한 인간에 대해 측정하는 정의로운 신입니다. 궁극적으로 적절성이 없습니다. 우리 모두는 저울에 무게를 싣고 부족함을 발견했습니다. 따라서 이에 대한 인식이 커짐에 따라 정의는 자비로 단련되었습니다. 이는 실제로 정죄되는 바로 그 결함의 요소를 묵인함으로써 사물을 평등화하려는 시도에 불과합니다. 현대인의 정신은 지금은 가혹하고 지금은 효과가 없는 이 극단 사이 어딘가에서 불확실하게 변동합니다. 나에게 이러한 준절대적 기준에는 타당성이 없는 것 같습니다.

 

▶ It is the essential fact of love as I conceive it, that it breaks down the boundaries of self. That love is most perfect which does most completely merge its lovers. But no love is altogether perfect, and for most men and women love is no more than a partial and temporary lowering of the barriers that keep them apart. With many, the attraction of love seems always to fall short of what I hold to be its end, it draws people together in the most momentary of self-forgetfulnesses, and for the rest seems rather to enhance their egotisms and their difference. They are secret from one another even in their embraces.

Wells)(1909)는 작품 외적으로 작가인 웰스가 영국 페미니스트 작가 겸 학자 앰버 리브스(Amber Reeves)(1887~1981)와 연인이 되어 당대 문학계에 거대한 스캔들을 일으켰습니다. 당시 웰스는 첫 번째 부인 이사벨 메리 웰스(Isabel Mary Wells)와 이혼 후 두 번째 부인 에이미 캐서린 로빈스(Amy Catherine Robbins)와 살고 있었습니다. 임신하게 된 앰버는 웰스를 떠나 G.
