About this Book

"Between 1936 and 1966 the Negro Motorist Green Book was a list of safe places for Black people during their travels throughout segregated USA. The Photographer's Green Book, in that tradition, is a list of resources to navigate the photographic community which has historically denied the voices of those other than predominantly white cis male artist. It expands on the original Green Book's target audience, to include the full scope of the People of the Global Majority as well as the LGBTQI+ community and all of their intersections. It is our belief that the contemporary moment, while influenced by the past, must also include the varying struggles and voices of those living in the 21st century. Inclusion, diversity, equity, and advocacy(I.D.E.A) are the core principles of The Photographer's Green Book, which guide the questions we ask, resources we build, and the engagements we partake in for our community. Our listing of organizations includes spaces which have been entrenched in filling the void with vibrant and diverse voices, and some newcomers who are taking the steps towards equity. Our List For Those Considering Diversity When Complacency Wasn't Enough is a resource that can be used by those actively engaging the photographic community to be more inclusive by supplying them with questions to consider as they do the much needed work. This engagement can be both inwardly personal and outwardly institutional restructuring. Our Green Pages is a list of readings which can begin to form a new canon of thought and conceptualization around what photography is and can do. It challenges us to move away from Eurocentric ideology to conceptualize and validate photographic production. These resources are tools and affirmations which are essential to navigate a photographic tradition which continues to negate the voices and experience of so many people. This is a tradition that can be isolating and troubling to navigate alone.
