Nothing about Joe Haan's life was easy. Despite his struggles - born into poverty, forgotten in a lonely orphanage, enslaved to a cruel farmer, drafted into some of the toughest fighting in WWII - he was the ultimate survivor. For nearly ten years Joe was on the move. He rode the rails, slept under the stars, and crouched in muddy foxholes. Joe never slowed down, and he never stopped fighting. Throughout it all, he became remarkably self-educated and expressed himself through poetry, stories, and music. Joe was a man who firmly believed that to survive as a species, mankind must adapt and evolve in what he called the cosmic shooting gallery of life. He was appalled by tyranny and the ignorance that he felt plagued the world. Chief among these tyrannies was religion, and he railed against its authority from his earliest days. In his final years, Joe proudly proclaimed why he was, truly, "god's angry man."
