The people of Fraglund invite a renowned lawgiver and judge called the Great Roarer ot come into their country and take over as chieftain. His rule is a success until his young son, Listener, abjuring the fierceness of his father, goes to the aid of a dying enemy on the battlefield. Listener fails to save the man, but is given a stone as a dying gift. The stone whose magnificent power he does not yet appreciate. This is the beginning of Listener's tremendous journeyings around Fraglund. It is a journey that will take many years to complete.
