About this Book

It is with great pleasure and gratitude that we present this book entitled "Thrombosis, Fundamental and Clinical Aspects" to professor Jos Vermylen on the occasion of his 'promotion' to professor emeritus at the Catholic University of Leuven. During his forty year long career, over 60 fellows from more than 20 countries all over the world, joined him at the Center for Thrombosis and Vascular Research in Leuven, to profit from a most challenging environment where fundamental aspects of thrombosis and haemostasis were studied, often initiated by a clinical observation. His scientific and clinical achievements, as well as his wise, sincere and upright personality have had a major impact on all of us.

Therefore, it is no surprise that so many of his former and current coworkers and friends agreed to lecture at the "XthETRO advanced teaching course on Thrombosis" which we organized in Blankenberge in his honour. We are also very grateful to these lecturers for their enthousiastic participation in generating this special book. With both initiatives, we have chosen to pay tribute to Jos in a way that he appreciates most: coach young people into the fascinating field of thrombosis and haemostasis.
