Essays marking its 13th centenary shed light on a law that lay down ground rules for warfare between the groups that made up the Irish people at the time. The instigator of the law was Adomnan, abbott of the island now known as Iona, whose attempt to establish a more peaceful society is remembered as an important moment in Irish legal history. Three essays--providing an overview of the law, an introduction to the society in which it was promulgated, and an introduction to the life of Adomnan--are followed by a translation of the law's text.
