▶ ON THE ART OF KAHLIL GIBRAN. He has surrendered his position as a leader in the world of the near East in order to bring the traditions and genius of the Arabic people to the attention of the Western world. And although commentators have long since acknowledged our debt in literature to the Arabs, who introduced rhyme into Europe over a thousand years ago, and historians have admitted the impetus which was given to the sciences by Arabic philosophers, yet it remains the task of a modern to introduce us in painting to the vast poetical conceptions which constitute a part of the heritage of the Arabian race mind. ▷ 칼릴 지브란의 예술에 관하여. 그는 아랍 민족의 전통과 천재성을 서구 세계에 알리기 위해 근동 세계의 지도자로서의 지위를 포기했습니다. 그리고 해설자들은 천 년 전에 운율을 유럽에 도입한 아랍인들에게 문학에서 우리의 빚을 오래 전부터 인정했고 역사가들은 아랍 철학자들에 의해 과학에 부여된 자극을 인정했지만 여전히 그것은 현대인의 과제로 남아 있습니다. 아라비아 인종 정신의 유산의 일부를 구성하는 광대한 시적 개념을 그림으로 소개합니다.

 

▶ The art of Gibran is symbolic in the deepest meaning of the word because its roots spring from those basic truths which are fundamental for all ages and all experiences. He senses the meaning of the earth and her productions; of man, the final and the consummate flower, and throughout his work he expresses the interrelating unity of man with nature. ▷ 지브란의 예술은 모든 연령과 모든 경험에 근본적인 기본 진리에서 뿌리를 내리기 때문에 단어의 가장 깊은 의미에서 상징적입니다. 그는 지구와 그 산물의 의미를 감지합니다. 인간의 최종적이고 완성된 꽃이며, 그의 작품 전반에 걸쳐 자연과 인간의 상호 관계적 통합을 표현합니다.

 

▶ His paintings are mostly wash drawings and only here and there does his pencil co-operate with his brush to suggest and complete the theme. The level of his painting is very delicate—plane suggesting another plane in the most subtle gradation so that at first there seems to be but little colour and then comes a swift realization that it is all colour—only imperceptibly diffused. ▷ 그의 그림은 대부분 워시 드로잉이며 여기저기서만 연필과 붓이 협력하여 주제를 제시하고 완성합니다. 그의 그림의 수준은 매우 섬세합니다. 평면은 가장 미묘한 계조로 또 다른 평면을 암시하므로 처음에는 색이 거의 없는 것처럼 보이지만 곧 모든 색이 눈에 띄지 않게 확산된다는 것을 즉시 깨닫게 됩니다.

 

▶ Gibran is an interpreter of “the heavens above and the earth below.” He recalls like a fleeting memory, the meaning of the great clouds which swept like a flock of storm gulls before the bewildered eyes of primitive man, but he has likewise sounded the pit of agony into which the soul descends during the crucifixion of its development. For Gibran is not alone interested in the story of man, he is interested in the history of life; he is not concerned merely with its portrayal, he shares its struggle. He is impelled by that force which lies beyond all things animate and inanimate—that force which produces, destroys and recreates with the same intensity, the same purpose and always to his eyes, with the same succession of beauty. ▷ 지브란은 "위로 하늘과 아래로 땅"의 해석자입니다. 그는 원시인의 어리둥절한 눈 앞에서 폭풍우 갈매기 떼처럼 휩쓸었던 거대한 구름의 의미를 덧없는 기억처럼 회상하지만, 마찬가지로 영혼이 발달의 십자가에 못 박히는 동안 내려가는 고통의 구렁텅이를 들려주었습니다. 지브란은 인간의 이야기에만 관심이 있는 것이 아니라 생명의 역사에도 관심이 있습니다. 그는 단순히 묘사에만 관심이 있는 것이 아니라 그 투쟁을 공유합니다. 그는 생물과 무생물의 모든 것 너머에 있는 힘, 즉 동일한 강도와 동일한 목적으로 항상 그의 눈에 동일한 연속적인 아름다움으로 생산하고 파괴하고 재창조하는 힘에 의해 움직입니다.

 

▶ There is a tradition so old that its origin is lost in the mists of antiquity where it is acclaimed as the symbol of our common ancestor Adam. Its sign signifies “Dum voluit spiritus Mundi.” Out of the illimitable past—illuminating the East, touching in turn Greece, Italy, Flanders, Germany, France and Spain,—so passed the great creative spirit in the world of art; what if this same illuminative spirit should be in turn approaching our shores, provided that we are receptive enough to understand and to assimilate its fundamental message. ▷ 우리 공통 조상 아담의 상징으로 찬사를 받는 고대의 안개 속으로 그 기원을 잃어버릴 정도로 오래된 전통이 있습니다. 그 기호는 "세상의 영이 원하는 동안(Dum voluit spiritus Mundi)"를 의미합니다. 동방을 비추고 그리스, 이탈리아, 플랑드르, 독일, 프랑스, 스페인을 차례로 건드리는 무한한 과거로부터 예술계의 위대한 창조 정신이 지나갔습니다. 만약 우리가 그 근본적인 메시지를 이해하고 동화할 수 있을 만큼 충분히 수용적이라면, 이 동일한 빛나는 정신이 다시 우리 해안에 접근한다면 어떨까요?
