▶ SF 작가 쥘 베른의 흔치 않은 로맨스(Romance)! : 알렉상드르 뒤마 피스(Alexandre Dumas fils)(1824~1895)와 공저한 단막극 부러진 빨대(Les Pailles rompues)(1950)로 극작가로써 등단하였으나, 무명작가에 머물렀던 쥘 베른이 작가로써 명성을 본격적으로 대중들에게 알리기 시작한 작품은 단편 기구여행(A Voyage in a Balloon)(1851)과 이를 확장한 단행본 기구를 타고 5주간(Five Weeks in a Balloon by Jules Verne)(1863)입니다. 그 이전에 집필한 작품은 우리에게 친숙한 ‘쥘 베른식 SF와 모험 이야기’, 즉 경이의 여행(Voyages Extraordinaires) 시리즈와 작풍은 물론 장르마저 다릅니다. 그의 팬이라면 로맨스(Romance)에서 오히려 작가의 정제되지 않은 매력을 발견하실 수 있을지도?!

 

▶ 책 제목의 리마(Lima)는 여주인공 이름이 아니라, 남미 페루공화국(Republic of Peru)의 수도입니다. 주인공 마르틴 파즈(Martin Paz)는 지참금에만 혈안이 된 유대인 사무엘(Samuel)의 딸 사라(Sarah)와 사랑에 빠진 원주민(Indian)입니다. 그녀는 부유한 메스티소(Mestizo) 앙드레 세르타(André Certa)의 구애를 거절하기 힘든 상황이였기에, 마르틴과의 순수한 사랑 사이에서 가냘프게 흔들립니다. 마르틴 또한 스페인의 잔혹한 압제로부터 독립하고자 하는 민족주의자(The Indian Patriot)로써의 신념과 유대인 아버지를 둔 사라와의 사랑 사이에서 방황합니다. 로맨스 독자의 입장에서 썩 만족스럽지 않은 연애담과 (사무엘을 자신의 딸마저 거래의 대상으로 삼은 냉혹한 유대인 상인으로 묘사한 작가의) 반유대주의(反Judea主義, anti-Semitism)를 비판할 수 있겠습니다만, 19세기 영국 독자라면 최소한 바다 건너 페루 리마를 배경으로 펼쳐지는 이국적인 묘사 – 풍광, 종교, 전투... 만큼은 흥미진진하였을 것입니다.

▶ Sarah was then eight years of age. Already graceful and charming, she pleased all, and was the idol of the Jew. All her inclinations were unhesitatingly gratified. Always elegantly dressed, she attracted the eyes of the most fastidious, of which her father seemed strangely careless. It will readily be understood how the mestizo, André Certa, became enamored of the beautiful Jewess. What would have appeared inexplicable to the public, was the hundred thousand piasters, the price of her hand; but this bargain was secret. And besides, Samuel trafficked in sentiments as in native productions. A banker, usurer, merchant, ship-owner, he had the talent to do business with everybody.

▶ The plan of the conspiracy was well conceived and the hour of its execution well chosen. Peru, almost depopulated, counted only a small number of Spaniards and mestizoes. The invasion of the Indians, gathered from every direction, from the forests of Brazil, as well as the mountains of Chili and the plains of La Plata, would cover the theatre of war with a formidable army. The great cities, like Lima, Cusco, Puña, might be utterly destroyed; and it was not to be expected that the Colombian troops, so recently driven away by the Peruvian government, would come to the assistance of their enemies in peril.
