"This book, written by GBMFD Lt. David Siegel, examines the earliest history of the fire department. Starting as a frontier community facing the dangers of fire, a volunteer department struggled to form from 1841 through stability by 1856. Volunteers gave way to a paid, full-time, modernized department in 1892. Volunteers gave way to a paid, full-time modernized department in 1892. Annexation of the City of Fort Howard in 1895 brought full-time fire protection to both sides of the Fox River. None of these (an many other) changes just happened--all were prompted by serious and significant fires.
