Original holograph volume and photocopies of the original pages pertaining to James Dunn's diary. The volume has title page: The Lawyers' Common-place Book with an Alphabetical Index of most of the Heads which Occur in General Reading and Practice. The volume was published in Boston by Hilliard, Gray and Co. in 1886. The preface in the book is inscribed: Miss Katie Dunn's book, Sytle City, February 28, 1882. James Dunn's diary entries are dated between March 9 and June 11, 1864 and include descriptions of the Red River Expedition, interactions between the Texas Infantry and the Iowa regiment, the French and Creole residents encountered along the river, and his wounds and recovery. The diary also includes some of Dunn's poetry. Many of the pages in the volume are blank and it appears that several pages have been removed. The volume includes scattered notes on various subjects and a party guest list (ca. 1880).
