American Railway Union Elects Officers

Published as part of a general labor article “Agreed to the Increase” in Chicago Inter-Ocean, vol. 22, no. 25 (April 18, 1893), pg. 3.

Brief details about the conclusion of the organizational convention of the American Railway Union (ARU), held in the Greene Hotel, Chicago, from April 11-17, 1893.

The final session saw the election of officers for the new industrial union. These included Eugene V. Debs, editor of the Locomotive Firemen’s Magazine, President; George W. Howard, ex-Grand Chief of the Brotherhood of Railway Conductors, Vice President; Sylvester Keliher, Secretary-Treasurer of the Brotherhood of Carmen, Secretary-Treasurer.

In addition, a board of directors was chosen, which included W.H. Sebring, of the Order of Railway Conductors; Henry Walton, of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers; F.W. Arnold and J.A. Clarke, of the Order of Railway Telegraphers; W.S. Missemer, Grand Chief of the Brotherhood of Carmen, and L.W. Rogers, editor of the Age of Labor.
