Description
A simple introduction to philosophy, short and easy to read, written by a great philosopher, mathematician and British logician. Philosophy, wrote Bertrand Russell, cannot by itself determine the ends of life, but it can free us from the tyranny of prejudice and distortions due to a narrow opinion. The love, the beauty, the knowledge and the joy of life are things that conserve their brightness, however broad our vision. If philosophical cogitations can help us to feel the value of these things, they have played their part in the collective effort of man to bring light into a world of darkness. Bertrand Arthur William Russell (1872 - 1970), 3rd Earl Russell of Wales, was one of the most influential characters of the twentieth century. He considered himself a liberal, a socialist, and a pacifist, admitting though that he had been nothing of these things in a profound sense. A popularizer of philosophy and mathematics, Russell had worldly respect as a prophet of rational life and creativity. He was born in 1972, at the height of the economic and political power of the United Kingdom, and died in 1970, when the British Empire had already collapsed, drained its power by two debilitating wars and by the decolonization. Russell received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950, in recognition of his varied and significant writings, in which he fought for humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought. Even in extreme old age he participated in street political protests, always ending up in prison, to the consternation of the world.
