Description
The seaman John Jarwin and his dog Cuffy are the sole survivors of a wreck, floating on a simple raft. They are washed onto an island where they survive some months, before setting off in a new raft. But they are picked up by pirates, from whom they escape, but only just, by diving overboard when near another island, which they find to be populated by fierce savages, who normally eat any captives. But the last lot of British captives gave them bad tummy-aches, so Jarwin is spared. Eventually Jarwin's earnestness, and what they have heard of missionaries in Rarotonga, makes them investigate Christianity, and visit Rarotonga. Eventually Jarwin and Cuffy are able to sail for England on a ship owned by the Missionary society.
